In college, my university brainwashed me that we are the best school in the country, and because we are graduates of this school, we can be better than everyone else in the corporate and business world. My young mind and competitive spirit thought that it means we are better than baby boomers and Gen Xers.
This immaturity leads to what most people call, “entitlement.” I wanted to be successful now and prove that I’m better than people older than me without really showing anything.
My world changed when I attended the Global Leadership Summit, and Craig Groeschel’s message was, if you want to be a truly successful organization, you can’t judge or look down on people older or younger than you. Instead, a growing organization is where people of all ages work in harmony. When there’s a culture of supporting each other and pushing people forward that things become truly amazing.
That’s why I’m eternally grateful to our district builder, Godfather, and mentor, Bro. Vic Español for his patience and love in mentoring me. He understood my aggressive behavior and risk-taking attitude, but instead of deflating it, he polished my edges and redirected me to a more significant purpose. I owe a lot of who I am to today because he took a risk on a kid like me.
Last 2017, Boy Abunda in his show, The Bottomline asked me, what’s my message for millennials and generation z’s so they can be successful? My answer was, “young people, learn from people ahead of you. Think like a millennial, and work hard as a baby boomer, and you’ll succeed in no time.”
If you stop learning, you will start losing in life. That’s when people who work harder will beat you because they never stop learning and improving.
Starting today, let’s build a better home, a better Philippines, and a better Feast by learning from each other, appreciating each generation, and focus on creating a culture of love and support.
